In Loving Memory of Rita R. Bland

Rita R. Bland, a cherished homemaker and loving mother, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2023, at The Gardens of Paulding. She was born on December 19, 1950, in Van Wert, OH, to the late Robert and Julia (Wickstandt) Akom.

Rita dedicated her life to creating a warm and welcoming home for her family. As a devoted mother, she poured her love and energy into raising her children, Lori Bland and Gregory Bland. Rita's love extended beyond her immediate family, and she shared a special bond with her cousin, Karen Bortel.

Rita attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Van Wert. She was also a member of the former Van Wert Chapter of NAMI, serving as the past President.

Rita lived in Paulding and Van Wert her entire life. She loved to follow Wayne Trace athletics, especially basketball. Rita also was a skilled baker and she had a green thumb. Rita loved country music, but her ultimate favorite was Kenny Rogers.

Rita is survived by her daughter, Lori Ann Bland of Van Wert; her son, Greg (Anne) Bland of Woodburn, Indiana; a granddaughter, Abigail Brock-Zobrosky of Woodburn, Indiana; three great grandchildren, Viktor Bland, Damyen Bland, and Mauriella Bland; her special cousin, Karen Bortel; and her very dear childhood friend, Elaine (Cotterman) Sierer.

In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her grandson, Cody Bland, whom she fiercely loved.

To honor her life and bid her a heartfelt farewell, a Funeral Service will be held on December 26, 2023, at 11:00 am at the Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory, with Father Charles Obinwa officiating. Prior to the service, a Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday December 26, from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. Family, friends, and loved ones are invited to join and share stories, memories, and support during this difficult time. Following the service, Rita will be laid to rest in Scott Cemetery in Scott, OH 45886.
