Wilbur Erving

September 5, 1928 — July 19, 2018

Wilbur G. Erving, 89, of Celina, formerly of Lorain, OH & Tampa Bay Area of Florida, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 19, 2018 at his residence at Miller Place, surrounded by his family. He was born September 5, 1928, in Lorain, Ohio, to the late George W. & Alice E. (Chapman) Erving.

A graduate of Lorain High School, Wil went on to serve his country in the United States Navy. One of his proudest achievements was becoming an industrial engineer at US Steel in Lorain, from which he retired.  Wil enjoyed traveling and moved to Florida upon his retirement, living in Tampa, Palm Harbor, Trinity, Clearwater and lastly, Largo. He had a love of sailing and could often be found day sailing on Lake Tarpon in his Boston Whaler 5.2 Harpoon.

Unlike most people, Wil lived a wonderfully healthy life, on his terms, and exactly the way he wanted. He was staunch in his beliefs and would passionately defend them to anyone. People always knew where they stood with. He loved his family deeply, and he was loved greatly in return.

He is survived by his daughters: Janice (James) Strazinsky of Celina; Sandra Powell of Richmond, VA; Karen (George) Tomko of Medina; grandchildren: Quentin Keene of Houston, Texas; Heather (Sean) Sauer of Van Wert; Autumn (Mark) Redford of Richmond, VA; Jennifer Netzband of Parma; Mandy Bayler of Lodi; Matt Lott of Medina;  Jessica Strazinsky of Pickerington; Bryan Strazinsky of Pickerington; great-grandchildren: Jake, Logan, Chandler, Shelby, Avery, Aly, Drew, Alex, Drake , Jaxon, Hadley, Holden, Hudson; as well as his little companion, Beau.

In addition to his parents, Wil was preceded in death by his brother, Norman and sister, Cuddle.

At Wil’s request, and in keeping with his giving nature, his body was donated to The Ohio State University for the advancement of science.

Wil’s life will be celebrated during a private family reception.

Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements entrusted to Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory. Condolences may be expressed at www.alspachgearhart.com.
