Rodney W. Dawson, 51, of Convoy, passed away peacefully at home on November 4, 2018 after a short battle with cancer. He was born October 5, 1967, in Van Wert, to Barbara (Long) Burgess of Payne, and Donald Dawson of Van Wert.
Rod worked at Avangrid Renewables for the past 8 years. He was also devoted volunteer firefighter with Convoy Fire and EMS for 18 years. He enjoyed his time spent with both his work and fire extended families.
In 1986, Rod met and married the love of his life, Paula Carey. Together they had three daughters: Stacey (Shane) Carroll of Convoy; Stephanie (Eric) Hammond of Van Wert and Haley Dawson of Convoy; seven grandchildren: Braxton, Hunter, Remi, Gavin, Gabi, Lilly and Jaxson. Each of them knew that papaw was number one.
Rod had a zest for life and enjoyed anything outdoors. Golfing, metal detecting, fishing, gardening and canning, camping, working on cars and playing with the dirt bikes and go-carts were among his favorite thing to do.
Also surviving are his sisters: Gina Hummel of Convoy; Cindy (Kevin) Heller of IN; Diana (Mark) Breece of Van Wert; Denise Chavarria of Van Wert; Tonya (Michael) Green of Van Wert; Heidi Channels of Van Wert; brothers: Randy Hummel of Winslow, AZ; Trent (Stacy) Dawson of Delphos and Kevin (Jessica) Boroff of Payne.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Don Dawson; beloved grandmother, Carrie Dawson; brother, Carl Hummel, sister, Julie Wilson Miller and aunt, Alice Gerardot.
A celebration of Rod’s life will begin at 5 PM on Friday, November 9, 2018 at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory with visitation prior to the service from 2 to 5.
