Ralph Garwood

Ralph Wilson Garwood, of Van Wert, died 5:23 pm Monday, July 24, 2017 at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice. He was born May 30, 1937, in Willshire Township, Van Wert County, to the late Naomi Esther Nefferler and Harvey Clinton Garwood.

His wife, Carrie (Barns) Jellison-Garwood survives. They were married June 24, 2017. Other survivors include his daughter, Lisa Weil-Hull; two grandchildren, Matthew and Marcus Weil of Holly Michigan; two step children, Richard Jellison of Van Wert and Tammy (Wayne) Branham-Cripps of Defiance; five step-grandchildren, Cody Branham, Tanner Branham, Shenia Branham, Nick Jellison and Zack Jellison, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Ralph was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn A. Garwood, as well as his brothers and sisters.

Ralph was a graduate of Wren High School, after which he attended college for drafting. He went on to serve in the United States Army for six years and was honorably discharged in 1964. Ralph worked at Magnavox in Fort Wayne, Indiana for many years. He retired from Chrysler in 1989 after providing 24 years of faithful employment.

Ralph was a member of Trinity Friends Church of Van Wert where he was a devoted volunteer at the food bank. He also attended Jennings Road Church of Christ and was an active member of the American Legion and UAW Local 1331.

He was a compassionate and benevolent man who cared deeply for others. His passions included daily devotions with God, woodworking, participating on building projects, which included the construction of his home and making Carrie smile.

Funeral service will be 10:30 am on Friday, July 28, 2017 at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home and Crematory, Van Wert, OH with Rev. Steve Heilshorn and Rev Dave Ray officiating. Interment will follow in Ridge Cemetery, Middle Point, OH where military honors will be rendered by the combined units of the Van Wert VWF and American Legion.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 pm Thursday, July 27, 2017 at the funeral home.

The family suggest memorial contributions be made in Ralph’s name to Van Wert County 4-H.
